T.Kaladharan's show



The exhibition of T.Kaladharan's recent paintings, titled 'Nothing Is Lost, Series1-WATER' will open at Nanappa Art Gallery, Karikkamuri Cross Road, Ernakulam on December 10 at 10 in the morning. To be inaugurated by the noted writer M.T.Vasudevan Nair, this show is dedicated to the memory of the late writer Smt. Kamala Surayya. The show will continue till December 20.

'PREVIEW' at Gallery OED

'PREVIEW,' an exhibition of recent works by five artists - Manoj A.M., Martin O.C., Pramod C.G., Sanam C.N. and Vinu V.V. - will open at Gallery OED on December 2, 2009. The show will later travel to New Delhi, where NIV Art Centre will present it at their new space at Neb Sarai near Indira Gandhi National Open University in January, 2010.

Nangiarkoothu by Saritha

Saritha Krishnakumar will present 'Kamsavadham,' from the Sreekrishnacharitham Nangiarkoothu, at Thekke Madom, Thrissur on Saturday, November 28, at 6 pm. The performance is part of the Kutiyatta Parichaya Parampara organised by Ammannur Gurukulam.

New Kutiyattam performance

Ammannur Rajaneesh Chakyar will perform a newly composed portion of Kutiyattam, on this Saturday, November 21, 2009. He will present the character of Bhimasena, from the ancient Sanskrit play, 'Veni Samharam,' at Madhava Natya Bhoomi, the performance space of Ammannur Gurukulam, at Irinjalakuda. The percussion accompaniment will be provided by Kalamandalam Hariharan and Kalamandalam Ravikumar on mizhavu and Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan on edakka. The performance will begin at 6 pm.

'Kalyanasaugandhikam,' Kathakali

The Ernakulam Kathakali Club will present 'Kalyanasaugandhikam,' Kathakali as its monthly programme for November. The performance, organised jointly with the Ernakulam Siva Kshethra Kshema Samithi, will be held at the Ernakulathappan Hall, on Friday, November 20, 2009. Veteran actor Madavoor Vasudevan Nair will don the role of Hanuman in the performance, with Kalamandalam Sreekumar appearing as Bhima and Kalamandalam Pramod as Panchali.

Vocal accompaniment will be provided by Kalamandalam Balachandran and Kalamandalam Babu Namboothiri, with Kurur Vasudevan Namboothiri on chenda and Kalamandalam Prakashan on maddalam. Kalanilayam Saji will provide chutti (make-up), and the Aniyara (costumes) will be by Kumaran & party.

The performance will begin at 6 in the evening.

Theatre and Film Fest at Cherpu

A two-day festival of films and theatre will be held at Cherpu, a village in Thrissur district, on November 14 and 15, 2009. It is being organised by Badal Media, Cherpu, an organisation that stands for creative interventions in the social life by the cultural activists. Badal Media (or, Alternate Media), will present six films and two plays at the Panchayat Community Hall, Cherpu.

The festival will begin from the morning of November 14, with th screening of 'Kaliyorukkam,' (Mal / 50 min), directed by S.Sunil. Folllowing the screening, children can interact with Sunil and I.Shanmughadas. The second film in the morning session will be 'Kavitha Police,' (Mal/40 min), also directed by S.Sunil. The discussion between S.Sunil and the children will also be caried on. In the afternoon, the Bhutanese film, 'The Cup,' will be screened. followed by the Hindi film, 'Tare Zameen Par,' produced and directed by the Bollywood star Amir Khan.

The formal inauguration will be held in thening, with A.Vijayaraghavan MP inaugurating the festival. Poet and writer Alankode Leelakrishnan will deliver the key-note address. The Malayalam play, 'Basthukara,' directed by Narippatta Raju, based on the short story by Shihabuddin Poithumkadavil and presented by Nava Kerala Kala Samithi, Karalmanna.

The next day will begin with the film and theatre director Priyanandanan paying homages to the late actor Murali and director Lohithadas. Lohithadas's film, 'Adharam,' will be screened in the afternoon. Deepa Mehta's film, 'Water' will be screened. A seminar on 'Contemporary Face of Cultural Activities,' will be held with Vaishakhan, P.P.Ramachandran and Ravunni participating. The one-act play, 'Kavalkkaran,' written by A.Santhakumar and performed by Sasi Eranjikkal will be held in the evening.

Rajat Kapoor's 'Hamlet, The Clown Prince' in Kochi

'Hamlet, The Clown Prince,' an award-winning English play directed by the Hindi film actor Rajat Kapoor, will be staged at Kochi on November 15. The venue will be Kerala Fine Arts Hall, Foreshore Road, Ernakulam. The play, in Gibberish and English, has won the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards 2009, for Best Play, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and Best Costume Design.


It is performed by Company Theatre and the performers are Atul Kumar, Puja Sarup, Sujay Saple, Namit Das, Rachel D'Souza and Neil Bhoopalan. The play shows a bunch of clowns putting together a play, trying to enact Shakespeare's 'Hamlet.' They sometimes misinterpret the text, sometimes find new meanings in it, sometimes try to understand it and very often make a mess of it.
